God's power over circumstances
The story of Peter's imprisonment and escape is a great example of God's power over circumstances. At the time things were tough for Christians. They were being persecuted, imprisoned, tortured and murdered. Herod had had James killed and now Peter was imprisoned with a view to having him killed too. His friends were terrified and holed up nearby. Peter is rescued and led out of prison by an angel (Peter thinks he's dreaming), he comes to his senses knocks on the door of the house where his colleagues are staying and initially they refuse to believe it's him! (Acts 12: 15-16) .
As Bill Hybels puts it "First century Christians were no more inclined than we are to think that God would miraculously re-arrange circumstances in answer to prayer, but they prayed anyway. And God rewarded their somewhat incomplete faith not by sending them comforting visions but by altering history. "
God does have power over circumstances. We just need to believe it! |
